About Iblin

Stand on the hilltops of Iblin and you'll understand immediately why people have lived here for three thousand years. Mount Carmel to the west, Haifa glittering on the coast, the Zevulun Valley laid out below like a green canvas. The ancient olive groves, the silence between them — this view opens before a single alley has been walked.

Archaeological evidence runs deep. At Jabal Abu Mudawwar (جبل أبو مدوّر) — the Round Hill, a 175-metre walk from the village — Dr. Zvi Gal excavated Iron Age fortifications (9th–10th century BCE) with a city wall 2.3 metres wide, a rock-hewn wine press, and a summit cave. He identifies the site as biblical Zefat on the tribal boundary of Zebulun and Asher, overlooking the Yiftah'el Valley. Further habitation layers extend through the Persian, Hellenistic, and Roman periods — including a ritual bath and hiding refuges associated with the Great Revolt — reaching into the Mamluk era (14th century CE). An ancient road once connected Acre to Tzipori along Nahal Ibillin.

Abilim — that's what they called this place in Talmudic sources, as a Jewish town with a synagogue. Stones carved with a menorah and an Aramaic inscription have been found here. The name even appears in the Cairo Genizah — that thousand-year-old hidden archive discovered in Egypt. A place mentioned in that many sources doesn't happen by accident.

Today, 13,555 people live here — around 58% Muslim, 42% Christian — in the kind of daily togetherness that only generations of real neighbourliness produce. At Christmas, Muslim neighbours bring sweets. During Ramadan, Christian neighbours are invited to iftar. Not a slogan. Just what happens here.

Religious Heritage

Before Mariam Baouardy was born, her mother walked 170 kilometres on foot from Iblin to Bethlehem — to pray for a daughter who would live. Mariam came in 1846, the thirteenth child and the first to survive. In a narrow alley of this village, in a house of stone that still stands, one of the most remarkable spiritual lives in modern Church history began.

She was baptised at Mar Jeries Church — which still stands, still open, still a place of prayer today. She left Iblin, crossed the sea, joined the Discalced Carmelites in 1867, and founded the Bethlehem Carmel in 1875. Her relics rest there still, visited every year by pilgrims from around the world — Christians and Muslims alike.

On 17 May 2015, Pope Francis proclaimed her a saint in St Peter's Square before millions. In that moment, Iblin — a Galilean village most of the world had never heard of — entered the global Catholic map of sanctity. For those who know Iblin, it wasn't a surprise.

In November 2025, the foundation stone was laid for a new Spirituality Centre in Iblin dedicated to her — a home being built for pilgrims arriving from Italy, France, Lebanon, Latin America, and beyond. They come here because this is where it started.

Points of Interest

Historical Sites

What makes Iblin remarkable is that you can walk it. A few minutes separate the baptism site of a saint from a mosque built in 1767, from a stone courtyard holding five layers of history in one compound. No tour bus, no ticket — just curiosity and comfortable shoes.

Visitor note: Local materials note gaps in visitor infrastructure (multilingual signage, parking, on-site services). We recommend downloading the walking map and coordinating in advance for site visits. Attribution at some sites is tradition-based — the site uses transparent language ("locally identified as…").

Culture & Festivals

Events & Calendar

Christmas Nights

In December, Iblin lights up. Lights on every tree, the smell of homemade sweets, churches with open doors — and Muslim neighbours knocking with trays of desserts. Western Christmas (Dec 25) and Eastern Christmas (Jan 7): two reasons to celebrate in one season.

📅 Dec – Jan

Ramadan Nights

When the sun sets during Ramadan, Iblin wakes up. The smell of cooking, lanterns swinging, the sound of prayer mixing with children's laughter. The community iftar here is not a meal — it's an open invitation.

📅 Lunar

Saint's Feast

In late August, pilgrims arrive from Argentina, Lebanon, Italy — standing in the same street where Mariam Baouardy was born. A procession, a prayer, and a moved silence in front of the old stones. Those who come once, come back.

📅 Aug 25-26

Winter Festival

Galilee's winter light has its own gold — unhurried, Mediterranean, perfect for wandering between artisan stalls, tasting freshly pressed olive oil, and buying something made by local hands.
